Feeling Behind in Life: Why So Many Women Feel Like Everyone Else Has It Figured Out…
"I thought I'd be further along by now."
It's one of the most common things I hear from women in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Sometimes they're talking about their career. Sometimes it's relationships, motherhood, fertility, finances or simply feeling like they haven't become the person they imagined they would be. On paper, their lives might look perfectly fine, but inside they're carrying a belief that everyone else has somehow worked life out while they're falling behind. If you've ever found yourself wondering:
"Why do I feel so behind in life?"
"Why does everyone else seem to know what they're doing?"
"Have I missed my chance?"
You're not alone, and you're not the only woman asking these questions.
What does it mean to feel behind in life?
Feeling behind isn't about where you actually are, it’s about where you believe you should be. Many women carry an invisible timeline that tells them life is supposed to happen in a particular order.
By a certain age you should have:
A successful career
A happy relationship
Children—or certainty about whether you want them
Financial security
Confidence
A house
A clear sense of purpose
Everything "figured out"
When reality doesn't match that picture, it's easy to conclude that you're somehow failing, but life rarely follows a neat timeline.
Why do so many women feel behind?
We rarely compare ourselves with people's struggles, we compare ourselves with their highlights. Social media gives us carefully edited snapshots of promotions, engagements, weddings, babies, dream holidays and career milestones. Friends often share good news long before they talk about burnout, grief, relationship struggles or self-doubt. It's easy to believe everyone else is moving forwards while you're standing still. The truth is, most people are carrying doubts they don't talk about. The woman you envy may be questioning her marriage. The friend with the impressive career may be exhausted. The mum who looks like she's coping may feel she's completely lost herself. Everyone has a story you can't see.
Life doesn't follow one timeline…
One of the biggest myths women absorb is that there's a "right" age for everything.
Perhaps you've found yourself thinking:
"I should have met someone by now."
"I should have children already."
"I should be earning more."
"I should know who I am."
"I should be happier than this."
These expectations don't appear out of nowhere, they're shaped by family, culture, social media, friends, past experiences and the messages we've absorbed throughout our lives. Over time, those "shoulds" become so familiar that we mistake them for facts. But they're not facts, they're expectations - and expectations can be questioned.
Comparison steals more than confidence…
When you're constantly measuring your life against everyone else's, comparison begins to affect much more than your self-esteem.
You might notice that you:
Struggle to celebrate your own achievements
Feel guilty for resting because you're trying to catch up
Keep chasing the next milestone, believing it will finally make you feel enough
Avoid opportunities because you're convinced you've left it too late
Criticise yourself more harshly than you would anyone else
Feel anxious every time someone shares good news
Over time, life becomes less about what matters to you and more about proving you're not falling behind. That's an exhausting way to live.
The pressure to keep up can lead to burnout…
Many women respond to feeling behind by trying even harder. They work longer hours, say yes to everything, push themselves to be more productive. They rarely stop. For a while, this might look like success, but underneath they're becoming increasingly exhausted. Eventually, many women arrive in therapy not because they weren't trying hard enough, but because they've spent years trying to outrun the fear that they're not enough. Feeling behind and burnout often go hand in hand.
Why feeling behind can make you lose yourself…
When your attention is constantly focused on where everyone else is, it's easy to lose sight of where you're actually going. Instead of asking:
"What do I want?"
You start asking:
"What should I want?"
Instead of making choices based on your values, you make them based on keeping up. You might stay in a career that no longer fulfils you because it looks successful. You might stay in relationships that no longer fit because starting again feels like admitting failure. You might ignore the voice telling you something needs to change because everyone else seems content. The more you live according to someone else's timeline, the further you can drift from yourself.
Therapy can help you step off the comparison treadmill…
One of the most powerful parts of therapy is creating space to ask different questions.
Not:
"How do I catch up?"
But:
"Whose timeline have I been following?"
Together, we can explore:
Where your beliefs about success came from
Why comparison has become so powerful
How perfectionism or people-pleasing may be keeping you stuck
The fears beneath feeling behind
What genuinely matters to you now
How to build confidence in your own choices
How to create a life that feels meaningful rather than impressive
As an integrative therapist, I draw on person-centred therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Transactional Analysis, attachment theory and polyvagal-informed approaches. This helps us understand not only what you're experiencing, but why—and how you can begin moving forward in a way that feels true to you.
There is no universal timeline for a meaningful life…
One of the hardest things to accept is that life isn't a race. There isn't one correct age to change careers, to become a parent—or decide not to, to find love, start over, slow down or discover what matters most. Your life isn't late simply because it looks different from someone else's. Your path doesn't need to mirror your friend's, your sibling's or the people you follow online. A meaningful life isn't built by arriving first, it's built by living in a way that's aligned with who you are.
Therapy for women who feel behind in life…
If you're in your 30s, 40s or 50s and feel like everyone else is moving ahead while you're standing still, you don't have to carry that feeling on your own. Therapy offers a supportive space to explore the pressure you've been living under, challenge the beliefs that keep you comparing yourself and reconnect with what matters to you. You don't need to have everything figured out before asking for help, you don't need to be at rock bottom, and you certainly don't need to earn the right to slow down. You deserve a life that isn't measured by someone else's milestones,. you deserve a life that feels like your own.
Ready to stop measuring your life against everyone else's?
If feeling behind is affecting your confidence, relationships or wellbeing, I'd love to support you. Together, we can explore what's keeping you stuck, reconnect with your own values and help you move forward with greater clarity, self-compassion and confidence.
